Hello there, and thank you for visiting my lab website! My name is Kari Debbink, and I am an Assistant Professor at Bowie State University. I teach mainly microbiology I and II lecture and lab, as well as occasionally virology, senior seminar, and introductory biology. I also run a microbiology research lab that trains undergraduate researchers.
Before coming to BSU, I did my undergraduate work at New College of Florida, where I majored in biology. After that, I earned my M.Ed. and worked as a middle school science teacher for a total of 9 years in both Florida and Arizona. Though I loved teaching, I missed the challenge of academic science, so I decided to return to graduate school to pursue a Ph.D. with the goal of someday having a position where I could teach and do research (mission accomplished!). I attended University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill for my Ph.D., where I worked with Ralph Baric on norovirus epitope mapping. I then did a two-year postdoc studying influenza evolution with Adam Lauring at University of Michigan--Ann Arbor. I also did a second postdoc on flavivirus evolution with Ted Pierson at the National Institutes of Health. Check out the rest of my website to see our planned and current projects! |
